That is why, for the month of January, we would like to bring to light one dangerous element that is found in a lot of homes: radon.

What is Radon?

Radon (Rn) is a radioactive gas. It is created when the thorium or uranium in soil, rock, or water decay into radium, which decays into radon. Since it’s a gas, you cannot spot radon with the naked eye. However, what makes this gas even more difficult to detect is that it is both odorless and tasteless. The gas can get trapped inside homes and cause health problems for its inhabitants.

How Does Radon Affect My Health?

adon Action Month

Exposure to radon gas increases a person’s chance of developing lung cancer. After smoking, radon is the second most common cause of lung cancer in the US. It takes extended exposure to high levels of radon for this particular disease to be a concern. However, people who work in mines or those whose have been exposed to the gas while in their homes have to take note of the signs and symptoms of lung cancer.

  • Incessant or worsening cough
  • Chest pain that worsens with deep breathing, laughing, or coughing
  • Blood or rust-colored spit or phlegm
  • Shortness of breath
  • Hoarseness
  • Wheezing
  • Drastic weight loss
  • The feeling of weakness or lethargy
  • Stubborn infections (e.g. bronchitis and pneumonia)
  • Loss of appetite
